Midnight Rising: John Brown and the Raid That Sparked the Civil War by Tony Horwitz
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I just finished the audiobook and to be honest, I am going back to re listen to the chapters about the raid itself. I seem to have a hard time remembering the details of the raid beyond the overall sequence of events. (I also have taught 4th grade for a number of years and part of that is explaining John Brown's raid).
However, I still give this book 4 stars. Even though I can't recall the exact details about the raid, it's still that good. The lead up and aftermath of the story of John Brown is even more compelling than the events in October at Harpers Ferry. I enjoyed learning of his motivations and how his one act ended up leading towards the Civil War. I recently also just read Lies My Teacher Told Me, which covered this same topic, so it was a nice one-two punch.
I recommend this book to anyone who is into history, specifically the Civil War era. Though it is nonfiction, it is definitely not a dry read.
