The Never Game by Jeffery Deaver
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Lately, I seem to be inadvertently picking thriller novels that have themes that are critical to our modern day life. This book fits the bill, but alas, I cannot delve too deeply into it without spoiling it.
Think of this book as part Ready Player One and a homage to Saw (sans the gratitious violence), with a splash of Dog the Bounty Hunter thrown in. Colter Shaw is an intriguing protagonist and is very believable without being a Superman like character. I enjoyed watching how his story and the overall plot progressed.
I dinged the book a star for two main reasons. First, the book takes a bit too long to get to "The Whispering Man" element. The back cover talks about it a lot, but it's not even introduced until nearly 40% of the book. The other reason is because there is obvious sequel/series bait in the book. Will I read the second one? Absolutely, but I don't like when books are so blatant about setting up the next ones.
Nonetheless, I definitely recommend this book. It's an enjoyable thriller and can make you think about the untapped nefarious potential of the video game industry. There are plenty of solid twists and turns throughout, and is sure to keep your attention.
