They Cage the Animals at Night by Jennings Michael Burch
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
In middle school, this was one of the few books I was assigned to read that I actually A. finished the whole thing and B. enjoyed. Sorry Huckleberry Finn, Tuck Everlasting, and Great Expectations - SparkNotes saved me from you. Though it's been over a decade since I read it, I've already remembered it.
I've been having a desire to revisit this tale, but had a hard time locating a copy of it. I finally found an audiobook version of it recently. It is far more powerful as an adult read, now understanding the ramifications of foster care and parental abandonment. It's written in such an easy to follow and emotional manner.
I highly recommend this tale to all people.
