The Nothing Man by Catherine Ryan Howard
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I absolutely adored Howard's Rewind last year and its inventive approach to the thriller genre. This one again shook up the genre.
What we have here is a book within a book. Eve, the sole survivor in one of the Nothing Man's attacks, has written a true crime story about the saga of this serial killer. The main character, Jim, is actually the aforementioned killer, which isn't a spoiler since it's in the plot synopsis. He happened to find Eve's book. The Nothing Man (written by Howard) alternates between Jim's POV in reading the book and the actual memoir written by Eve, also called The Nothing Man.
Without giving too much away, I did see the final twist coming, but I thoroughly enjoyed this entire book. I listened to it as an audiobook, and actually found myself coming up with more excuses to sit and listen to it more than I usually do for an audiobook.
Well-worth the time to read (or listen). I look forward to reading more of Howard's work!
