You by Caroline Kepnes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I read this book after watching the Lifetime/Netflix adaptation. If I thought on-screen Joe was creepy, book Joe was even more disturbed, often uncomfortably so. There are also a number of significant departures from the show, but the overall premise remains intact.
My biggest gripe with the book is that there were a number of explicit sexual references that were way over the top. It could have been toned down and still taken the same effect.
Overall, I enjoyed reading the book, even if it made me uncomfortable at points. It was a fast-paced read and kept my interest. I enjoy the narration style (wherein Joe is addressing Beck in an internal monologue), which is also well-done in the show. Joe's descent into madness is more acutely described in the book than the show, where he almost seems charming in the show.
I recommend this book to fans of the show, but I will say that this is the rare instance when I do prefer the media adaptation over the book.
My biggest question now is do I read the sequel or do I wait for season 2 on Netflix and then read?
