The Chain by Adrian McKinty
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I absolutely loved the first part of this book, and about the first third of the second part. The premise was extremely interesting and well written. I really felt the plight of all the characters who were forced into The Chain. It reminded me of the movie Eagle Eye and I thought the book was going to go in a rogue AI route, which would have been an interesting twist.
However, the final two thirds of the second part (or final third of the book, for you math wizards) is where it fell apart for me. Without delving too much into spoiler territory, the villains just appeared to be sociopaths versus interesting antagonists. The ending wrapped up far too quickly, in my mind. Overall, I could have also done without the whole cancer and weird romance subplots, as I didn't think they added much.
Nonetheless, this is an engaging read and I enjoyed listening to it.
