The Toll by Neal Shusterman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
In my opinion, this book suffered from "end-of-trilogy-itis". It may be the fact that I read the first two back to back and over a year ago, but I just couldn't find the magic in this one. I felt like all the characters were separated from each other and there were about 16 different sub plots going on. I also felt Citra veered far too close to becoming another Katniss versus her own person. The timeline was often confusing in the first half of the book and the ending was far too convenient.
Negative thoughts aside, it's very well written and kept my attention. I still enjoyed the book, but the first two entries into the trilogy set a very high bar that this just didn't match. If it were a standalone, it would probably be a solid 4/5, but I rounded down a 3.5 since I had different expectation from the series.
I do recommend the entire trilogy, and perhaps it would be better reading all three in a row.
